The term of MLM segment may be new to many. However, to those who really wanted to succeed, in the complex web of the multi-level marketing industry, it is essential to do MLM segmentation. Basically, this technique is all about identifying the market you really aim to target.
At times, segmentation may be case-to-case basis. It may depend on the products that you offer or the business opportunity that comes with it. However, generally there are three major MLM segments that should be kept in mind.
MLM Segment 1: Family members, friends and colleagues
The term “warm market” may be familiar to you pertaining to your friends, relatives or colleagues, people you already know. It is crucial to focus on this segment, no matter what you heard about doing it, since you never know when and how their groups will expand. You don’t want to be an amateur and drag them to all the opportunity presentation you have but you must keep them in mind and, who knows, your relative might eventually join the bandwagon… So do not underestimate this group.
But as I said, avoid harassing this segment thinking that they are your relatives or your close friends and they will understand you. It is not how it goes and you might end up annoying them and they will stop taking your calls. Not worth it…
MLM Segment 2: Home Business Opportunity Seekers
Millions of people around the globe are looking for home-based business opportunities. There are just few problems that come along with this group:
- Unqualified prospects
- Strong Competition
- Tire-Kickers
It is important to really sift this second segment to save you time looking for real prospects and not just ending with so-called “interested ones” who are just searching for get-rich-quick schemes.
You must learn how to position yourself (more on that at the end) to only attract the right prospects from this segment and really sift through a large number of people to find the gems.
MLM Segment 3: Future Network Marketing Leaders
Targeting this third segment will definitely give you the feeling of finding this one diamond in the rough. Leaders in network marketing are not born leaders. Their interests and potentials are being build over years of study. They might be present in the first two groups we just discussed but it is pretty rare.
Exactly like the the second segment, you want to make sure you position yourself correctly so these leaders will find what you have to offer and find you as a leader. Leaders want to associate with leaders. So learn and become a person people want to follow!
Who are these people?
Basically, they may be people who already have a better understanding about the network marketing industry but are still searching for a better company to join. They may also be people who at one point in their lives became involved in MLM but lost touch and they want to build a business again.
I just talked to a gentleman who is an example of this. He built a very successful network marketing business about 15 years ago and he had over 5,000 people in his organization. He did it the “traditional” way. Unfortunately, and this is why you want to do some research about the company you want to join, his company executives stopped to get along and the company imploded…
After this experience, he went to do other things, some retail business and never really looked at the network marketing industry until very recently. After 15 years, the market changed dramatically and he actually did not really know how to connect with a lot of people fast and he asked for some help about online marketing. This is how he found me.
The point being that, even tough this person had WAY more experience than me in the industry, I have skills that he doesn’t and he ask me to teach him how to market online… On top of helping him learn online marketing, I have the opportunity to expose him to my primary company and he asked me to send him more information. I don’t know if he will join my team or not but that is OK. I have “showed the presentation” in a very non threatening approach. This is how it should be done…
So if you position yourself right, market a good system online and if you really focus your attention and time in this the MLM segment that makes the most sense for you, undoubtedly, you will make great connection and move your business forward…
The secret to successfully target this MLM segment is to use your full potential in both online and offline marketing. Just bear in mind that no matter what you do, your aim should not be focused on YOU or your opportunity but on what you can do to help them succeed.
