I was on the phone the other day with this gentleman who is building a network marketing business and I was asking some questions about how he was building his business, how his marketing plan looked like and at some point he asked me this one question that is so vague that there is just no real good answer:
“What does it take to reach Network Marketing Success?”
I had the typical response at the time: “You must make sure you use a solid marketing system that can leverage your time and you spend most of your time connecting with and helping people“.
As you can see, the answer is as vague as the question… Tough question though when you have just a few minutes on the phone with someone. I have never been too happy with the answer but I actually never stopped and thought about it (you know that is…).
So today I was going back to the conversation and I wondered if I could come up with a more precise and more useful answer. After putting some thoughts into it, here is what I came up with and here is the answer I will give from now on.
I call it “The 5 Steps To Network Marketing Success” and it goes somewhat chronologically.
1. You Need Something That People Want
I am not going too much into this one because it is a very obvious point but I will still detail quickly what I mean by “something”. The “something” here can actually be 3-fold here.
It can be the products that your network marketing company has. It can be the business opportunity. But most importantly it is about YOU. There are thousands of good products and good opportunities in the market; There even are thousands of distributors for the same MLM company, but there are only one YOU!
The question could then become. What do YOU, personally, have that people want? What do YOU bring to the table that others do not?
The answer to this question must be unique to you and must bring a lot of value to people. The answer to the question will be the reason people want to join YOUR team and not some other team. They must know that YOU will help them succeed.
So to make sure to complete step number one, you must think about how to differentiate yourself from the crowd. What is your value added? When you figure this out, you will be ahead of 90% of other marketers that are just carbon copy of others…
2. A Simple Marketing System That Works
The step 1 is a very psychological type of work to be done because it forces you to stop and think about how you can bring new ideas, new perspective on your business opportunity and help others do the same.
This second step will be a continuation and a start of an answer for step 1 as it is all about automation, duplication and making sure you use the power of systems to your advantage.
This second step in your journey to reach Network Marketing Success, is to make sure you leverage your time and efforts using a solid marketing system and funnel. The use of a system is critical. The system can be very simple. You can make sure you always use the same routine everyday to call leads that you purchased, showing them the same presentation and sending them the same brochures. As long as you are consistent with it and track results you will see results.
Here, however, I would like to mention another type of system, a more powerful type of marketing system. I will not going to give too many details here but the one think I will mention though is that you want to make sure your system helps you leverage your time and the time of your team members by doing the time intensive tasks of presenting, following up and training of all your leads and prospects. The system should even train you and help you find those essential leads, lifeblood of your business.

So find a solid system, plug yourself in, learn and grow.
3. Dedication and One or More Accountability Partners
I think this one is a difficult one.
Most people who start a network marketing business, especially the one starting part time, have a tendency to not take it as seriously as they would for a franchise or a brick and mortar business. I can be the low cost of the business or the new set of skills that are needed.
If you want to succeed you must make sure you are focused and dedicated in doing whatever it takes to make it happen. Do not “try” to do it. Do not “try” to find one hour a day to market your business. Do not “try” to call your leads and team members every day. As Nike commercial would say, “Just Do It!“.
On top of really committing to building a MLM business based on your goals and dreams, it is very important to be part of a group. I am not sure how to explain it but when you join a group of people sharing a common goal, be it generating more leads, improving skills or overall growth, it helps you being pushed you forward and it keeps you accountable to the group. When you join a group you will do more and better than by yourself.
So find a group (Facebook, Skype, Ning, etc.), make new connections and ask to be kept accountable. Journal what you do everyday, share your experience and learn from others.
4. Mentoring
I will approach this step number 4 two different way that you can still use chronologically.
First you must find someone that you could refer to as a mentor. This person must accept to help you more than others and answer all the questions that you have. Those question can be technical on how to use the system of step 2 for example but they can also be on a higher level, about how to manage time, how to keep motivation, how to grow personally and in the MLM business.
The second step is later on in your business. You must become to mentor and start helping more people on a very personal level. You must help them balancing their personal and business life. You must help them decide, based on each person, what marketing method will be the best to implement. To be able to do this you must become a master at connecting with people. If you want people to trust you and rely on your advice for their futre, you must be comfortable giving the advice. This is a long process and should not be rushed into.
So step 4 is about growing personally to be able to help others go through the same process.
5. Effective Leadership
The last and ultimate step is about leadership. How to become a leader in the industry.
Not everyone will reach this step and not everyone actually want to become a leader. Some people decide to build a business to complement a full time job or pay some bills. If someone’s goal is to make a couple thousands dollars a month with a MLM business, he or she might not need to become a “leader” to the level that I am talking about here (and that is perfectly fine).
To become the leader in your MLM company or even in the entire Network Marketing industry you must grow it. Nobody was born a leader. Some people start learning earlier than others in their life so it seems that they were born with it. Not at all. Learn, practice and hard work is what you need to become the leader you want to be (read the book called “The Talent Code: Greatness Isn’t Born. It’s Grown. Here’s How.” by Daniel Coyle).
This step 5 may be the hardest and the longest of all but if you are targeting Network Marketing success, true wealth, total financial, time and geographic freedom, it is absolutely worth it!

Here you have the 5 steps I came up with. I believe that keeping those 5 steps in mind at all times when building your business will help you stay on track and will allow you to focus on the right activities that are right for your business.
