The 5 Steps To Writing a Killer Social Media Bio So People Want To Connect With You!

EVERYBODY is on social websites: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Meetup are the biggest and most effective ones.

All those sites have something in common and it is the possibility for you to let people know who you are through the use of your “Bio“. The Bio or About Me pages is often the second most visited page on a Network Marketing blog or social site after the home page.

People are curious and as humans we are social being. People want to know who they are talking to. We want to find out if we can trust who we are talking to and we want to know fast!

Social Media Bio and About Me pages are the best place for that and special attention has to be put into crafting the best description about who you are and why people who put their trust in you… If you can craft a good Bio, you will attract the right type of people to you and your business.

The big question now is “how do I make sure my Bio is attractive?”.

Here are the 5 steps to writing a killer Social Media Bio:

1. Write down keywords about who you are personally

This first step has to be free flow. Do not think too much on how you are going to put your Social Media Bio together yet, just write down some keywords. Those must be about your interests, activities, philosophies and hobbies, things you accomplished. Keep those personal for now (no business related keywords).

When you have a list of about 15-20 keywords, pick 3 or 4 of the most attractive traits. If you are having a hard time choosing, think about how people like to describe you or even better, call some friends and ask them to answer the question for you: “if you were to present me, what keywords would you use?“. You will get great ideas!

2. Write down keywords about your business

The second step is about the business side. Do the same exercise as in Step 1 with keywords that would describe YOU in business. Not keywords that describe the business itself but YOU in your business, what are your strengths and what you have accomplished for example.

3. Start writing your first Social Media Bio draft

When you have picked both strong personal and business keywords, it is time to begin writing the first draft for your Social Media Bio. Try to make your bio not too long but long enough to get your message across. Around 100 words is a good length.

One tip to avoid a writers block: Try to write the Bio as an answer to someone who would ask you face to face “what do you like?” and “what do you do?“. The answer should flow and include the keywords you picked in step 1 and 2.

If you can visualize the conversation the style of your bio will be very relaxed and very conversational. The readers will feel like you are talking to them specifically and they will be able to easily connect with you.

In order to make the Bio less formal, try to add a touch of humor. You must stand out from the noise as your goal is to make sure people will remember you even after they have closed the page or clicked away.

Important Note: Do not try to correct and tweak, just write the whole Bio. We will work on the details in the next step.

If it is easier for you, you can separate both personal and business parts for your bio. In mine, I start with the business side and finish on a more personal note. It makes it more personal and people tend to remember what they just read so finishing with the personal part will make you more “real” in our virtual world…

4. Fluff It and have it proof read

Now, the first draft should be ready to be tweaked and finalized.

The first thing is to make sure you have used the keywords you picked in the the first steps. These keywords will help people find you when they search for what you have to offer. For example if you focus your marketing efforts on social media, make sure to also include keywords related to it such as brands (Facebook, Twitter, Digg), well-known people names (Katie Freiling, Mike Klingler), etc.

Your Social Media Bio should now be ready for review.

So the next step is to send it out to some people who know you and ask for feedback. You want to ask for two things. First you want to ask them if they feel that they can “connect” with what you say and who you are. And second you want to ask for suggestion on points you should add to make it more personal and “social“.

Don’t forget to check the spelling and grammar!

5. Copy & Paste Your Social Media Bio

Last but not least, copy and paste your Social Media Bio in all of you favorite social media sites. Make sure you use the same for all of them so when people find you all over the place they can really remember and connect with you. People get bombarded with so much new information every day that if they your Bio more than one they will remember they saw it before. Same recommendation for your profile and website photo. Choose one that is professional and always use the same. People will start recognizing you.
