Do a research on Ambit Energy online and you will find a ton of “Ambit Energy Scam” claims.
Most of those claims come from former Ambit Energy distributors that just did not make any money with it and claim it is a scam. It is the same with any other company out there.
There is no doubt that the Multilevel Marketing business is growing rapidly and most people have a hard time to adapt to the market. One indication is the different types of MLM companies trying to make it big in this multibillion dollar industry. In the past, the industry was dominated by companies in the health and wellness niche as well as companies selling household items. Now, even utilities are trying to make big in the network marketing industry.
Are those Ambit Energy Scam Claims funded?
With many states now giving consumers the right to choose their own electric supplier, companies selling the service are jumping the MLM bandwagon. One such company is Ambit Energy, one of the finest and most respected private retail energy retailers in the United States. In 2006, founders Jere Thompson and Chris Chambless discussed deregulation and decided to put up their own company. Their goal is to provide affordable energy and gas to people in the United States.
Based in Dallas Texas, the company is now servicing already deregulated states – Texas, Illinois, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania. As more and more states are deregulating, Ambit is looking forward to servicing other states as well. From the Multilevel Marketing Company’s humble beginnings, Ambit grew with almost $200 million in revenue as of 2008. In just a year, the figure almost doubled with $325 million in revenue for 2009. Ambit Energy is one of the fastest growing companies in North Texas, as cited by SMU’s Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship.
People who are wary of the Multilevel Marketing business in general will be glad to know that Ambit Energy is a member of the Direct Selling Association or DSA which means that they abide and are guided by the code of ethics of the organization to ensure independent distributors and consumers that the business has the best business practices. You should ONLY joining a company member of the DSA.
Overall, the is no risk of an Ambit Energy scam in this very regulated energy market and it is actually a very ethical and legitimate company.
The Ambit Energy Compensation Plan
Deregulation is only available in select states and others are taking the necessary steps to follow. Therefore, it gives Ambit and their independent suppliers a vast market opportunity. Unlike other service providers, Ambit gives consumers the option to pay less for something they use every single day – natural gas and electricity. The compensation plan looks like a unilevel plan with 5 or 6 levels of payments. I personally prefer unilevel plans as they are the fairest overall for both the new comers and the big players. One thing to mention is the cost of joining the company as a consultant. The one-time cost of the Program is $429 with no annual renewal fee. I will not go into more details of the plan here as it would become a very long post. Overall it is a good plan with some immediate income and some long term residual income.
With Ambit Energy (as with many good companies), you have the potential to earn big. However, this is not to say that it’s going to be easy money. Just like any other business, you need to invest a significant amount of time and energy. Your business will not grow unless you work hard. This is especially true since the very core of the Ambit compensation plan is their referral program. The more people you refer to use their service, the bigger your income is going to be.
How do you generate more leads and have more people signing up for the service?
Sure, you can invite your friends and family. However, the list is going to be short. You need to have a marketing plan to leverage a better source of leads and customers. I am talking about the internet so you can get a huge pool of new leads and potential partners. What if you could position yourself so that people looking for cheaper energy energy could find you? Would that enable you to get some big checks quick?
What if people looking for a business opportunity could find you? Would that allow you to grow a huge team and explode your income?
If you can learn how to do that and position yourself properly online, there is no reason you cannot succeed. But you must learn how to do it and how to do it right.
I am personally not with Ambit but I help Ambit distributors in their business, teaching them step by step how to use an online lead generation system that allows them to learn how to position themselves properly online, and actually do it right!
By the way, if you are not with Ambit yet and still searching for a way to make more money or looking for the right team, make sure you have a look at what my team and I are doing. We focus on online marketing so no bothering friends and family. We have a strong system in place and a great team support and synergy because we all use the same marketing system. I am not a pushy person and I don’t work with everyone, but when we talk we can figure out if this is for you and if you are good for our team… It goes both way…

Just a polite heads up – you need to proofread your website. I noticed multiple typos.
Hi Liisa, thanks for the heads up!
This site is definitely by someone who has been coached by or is a part of Ambit. Dissenting voices will most likely not show up in the comments which is why only 2 comments are on the page as of this writing.
This article just repeats the same old points that Ambit tells their reps to say whenever someone questions the company in any way.
Hi Bill,
First of all thanks for stopping by and taking the time to voice your opinion.
I am actually not associated with Ambit whatsoever. This is just a review for people who might think about joining the company as a business. I give facts and some opinions based on my experience.
Ultimately it is up to people to decide if it is a company for them or not.
Here is the scam with Ambit- from a former ‘customer’. You get your bill somewhere between the 10th and the 15th. If you are not paid in full by the 20th, they immediately issue a disconnection notice, and charge you almost $200 to keep your service on. They play like this is something they have no choice in, and they are trying to help you out by stopping the lineman who may already be on his way. Right.. Part of that cost is supposedly a deposit, but you have to be even more on time (impossible unless you guess your bill amount and pay in advance) for 12 months straight to ever get that deposit back. Also, they put lots of fees on your bill that are made to look like taxes. Oh and if you’re unhappy you can’t leave right away because your MLM person signs you up for a 12 month contract. All of this is not illegal, I guess, but it’s still a dirty scam. Avoid Armpit Energy.
This is NOT TRUE!! these people are telling major lies!!!! They are clueless, I have made money on this all ready you fools!!!
With all due respect, you clearly do not know what you are talking about.
First of all, what contract did you sign? There is NO contract whatsoever. The 12 month fixed rate means that your rate will not change for 12 months…but you can cancel at ANY time because there is no contract.
Second, Whoever your service provider was before you started, stays the same after you sign up with Ambit. If you have “customer service” issues, you need to take them up with your provider. Ambit simply supplies the energy, they have nothing to do with billing, transmission, set-up, etc.
Just wondering…how can you add a middle man and costs would go down? Wouldn’t the cost increase by adding another party that needs to get paid (actually, you’re adding 2…Ambit, and the sales person). Straight from the manufacturer is cheapest…adding a wholesaler and distributer adds cost…thus, this doesn’t make sense. Any explanation would be wonderful.
John,
This is a good question. I am not with Ambit so I do not have an answer for you, maybe someone who knows more can give a more detailed answer here.
John,
You could not have posted a better question to prove my point that this is a parasite.
While this MLM business might or might not be a scam, this is irrelevant because this is worse than a scam – I call it parasite. A parasite lives off the host until it destroys the host. This parasite will not destroy the host because the government will not allow it – not necessarily a good thing.
As a businessman I have been bombarded (by phone and by sales reps) by too many so called “energy companies”. They always include the word energy in their name to sound legit and reputable. While they may be legit, their existence is shameful in my opinion. None of them produces any energy and they are a parasite to the free market as I shall explain.
I believe in free market and a free market cannot exist under a heavily regulated, heavily manipulated and demonized world.
This parasite exists under the guise of “breaking the monopoly”, a laughable concept in this case. While monopoly in general is counter free market, regulated monopoly is perfectly compatible with the concept of free market. Imagine too many competing electric delivery companies; you would have too many overlapping wire grids. Imagine too many competing transit systems; you would have too many overlapping tracks and so on. As you can see, in some cases you need to have a monopoly – a regulated monopoly. A regulated monopoly is a good thing because it addresses the overlapping aspect while it regulates (dictates) what this company can and cannot do, what their profit margin should be; hence, making it a consumer friendly monopoly that is compatible with the concept of free market. It takes away the financial impact on the consumer while allowing it to minimize overlapping wire grids, tracks, pipes (gas, water), etc…
A regulated monopoly need not be broken.
When At&t monopoly was broken in 1984, it was done by the free market. To make a long story short, MCI challenged few aspects (International and long distance calling service) bringing the consumer truly more competitive international and long distance service more competitively than At&t without being a parasite on At&t. There are more details, merits and aspects of At&t monopoly break up that were justified by a huge and growing single monopoly that controlled the whole US market. In energy, we do not have a single monopoly controlling the entire US market. We have too many locally regulated energy monopolies that need not be changed.
The so called “new energy companies” don’t produce any new energy. In a supply and demand driven world, they produce neither new energy source (supply) nor any new customers (demand). They just squeeze themselves in between the already existing suppliers and the already existing consumers (demand) without contributing to either side. The cost that they claim to save the consumers comes not from any new efficiency introduced by streamlining any process. On the contrary, as John pointed out “…how can you add a middle man and costs would go down? Wouldn’t the cost increase by adding another party that needs to get paid (actually, you’re adding 2…Ambit, and the sales person). Straight from the manufacturer is cheapest…adding a wholesaler and distributer adds cost…thus, this doesn’t make sense.”
The answer to John’s question is unfair regulation and more of it. The true energy providers (the champions) are overly regulated while the “new energy companies” (parasite) that introduce more inefficiencies by creating at least two or more new layers (middle men) between the existing providers and the existing consumers are less regulated.
As a matter of principle, I have resisted buying into this concept of doing business with parasite regardless of their claims. Further; having looked at some of the complaints made by victims of buyer’s remorse make me feel like I made the right call.
Also, I wanted to point out. This person is clearly not a third party. If this post even makes it onto the page (which I highly doubt). They have some connection to Ambit, and/or at the very least to the online leads generator they’re referring you to. By clicking on that banner they’re most likely getting a commission. That in itself could be called a scam as they’re not being open to that relationship. Just my observation, and that may or may not be correct.
Hi John,
I am absolutely not connected to ambit at all. Never been and most likely will never be.
Yes I have connection with an online business building system, and yes I promote it on my blog and make upfront commissions with it. I never hide it.
Why wouldn’t I? It works for me and it can work for anyone in any company so YES I absolutely use My Lead System Pro to generate leads and make money.
You are not adding any “middle man.” You are simply instructing your local utility, in my case, National Grid, to deliver energy at the Ambit cost instead of it’s own rate. The terms in NY are that you will get at least a 7% discount from the utility’s posted rate for 2 months, and a minimum of 1% under that same rate after that.
You are still a customer of the big power company, you are just getting lower cost as a customer. My bill is still from National Grid.
To NY post … what is the deal in NY State, negative or over-reactive from former customers/consultants who expected a 50% reduction right away the first yr … the way it has been explained to me from a longtime friend is that where people go wrong – signing up people and not explaining that overall you expect to save 70-100 USD per yr and consultancy allows you to eventually get to the point after 15-22 people at least a savings of utility by 20-50% (depending on how much electricity you use) per yr plus some rebate checks that cover the website expense – I have seen my wife’s and her site does exist for sign up – we have folks up the street who are regional consultant and SRs who have made a fair amount monthly – enough to pay the mortgage – what’s up before we get too far into it?
Hey Anon,
You’re probably referring to Ambit’s Free Energy program. Ambit allows every customer to refer people through their own free website. After five referrals, you’re rewarded a travel package from a list you could check out at http://ambittravel.com. After fifteen referrals, Ambit totals up the average bill amount of the 15 customers, and mails you that amount to cover your energy bill! So yes, you can definitely save up to 50%, as Ambit is an energy supply company which only makes up half the bill.
If you want to actually check out the opportunity, you can check one out at AmbitEnergy.co
Thanks a lot for this article you are like a lighthouse in this matter because I was just asked by a friend of mine who signed up in “Ambit Energy” as a Independent Consultant, to check the validity of his status in the company and he gave me a website supposedly his website that he paid for it $ 24.00 a month for the ambit energy . and guess what… the website doesn’t exist so you realy enlightened me in my research about the above company.
By the way ,I’m also currently working as a distributor in a MLM company but this company his well known in the world for their products and honesty and unprecedented growth thank G-D.
with respect
Vita-Life
if the point of the business would be to sell energy and sign up customers to switch, fine. but the way it sounds is that the point is to hire others, to hire others, to hire others etc. the 429 plus 25 a month for the website is what keeps everybody going. the company is laughing as they are profiting from reseling the energy. all the others are just chasing theyre own investment back from the next sucker.
Actually, when the Co-Founder, Jere Thompson, Jr, was being interviewed, and was asked just how much of the companies revenue come from the $429 start up fee, the answer was LESS THAN 2%. And if it goes up higher than that, (the only reason it would go up higher is if consultants are not doing anything to build there business.) than the company kicks in with TRIPLE BONUSES to motivate their consultants and to get rid of the money!!!!!
Hope that helps.
By the way, I’m making more than $5,000 a month with Ambit, and that is NOT a lie.
Just came from a home show expo in NJ, and spoke with ambit consultant ( first time I heard of this energy saving company ) sounded good, had some questions, ans. good, but the consultant to get consultant plain, when asked what if you run out of people ?, I was told you make more money getting consultants than customers, but thought the plan was to help save money for the customers and make a little to, because it is a business. I don’t think its a scam it sounds like a pyrimid ( a very big pyrimid ) and when your at the beginning you do make money, right now its at the beginning and it probrably will be for a while since it only has about 5 states now, but in the long run are we really helping people save on their bills ? I have not signed up yet, will go to a big info meeting first need mor questions ans. first, but how often do you get on the ground floor of a business. HELP !!!
I have been asked several times by a friend to join. I don’t mind saving as much as the next person. I have a problem with the “if you become a consultant and sell sell sell you can get free vacations!!”. To me its like selling Avon. Its annoying and it only works IF you have people interested. I lost interest after she started spouting off the “free” things you get if you signed up, pay $X a month to keep your website, get 15-20 new customers a month, yaddy yadda. How many people can you possibly sell to? It sounds like a scam, didn’t interest me especially when I have to pay for my “business” every month.
Have you even tried what it cost every month being In business, its a shame, you think money will just fall from your money tree, even thou you donot nurture your money tree every day, week monthly or yearly(pruning). Even a lame tree which grows in my front yard, i take care of it and hey!! FORGETTING THIS IS MONEY TREE you have to put in some efforts for it to grow. SHAME SHAME when you say “It sounds like a scam, didn’t interest me especially when I have to pay for my “business” every month” its not even worth for you, to do any business as people like you am in business and doing Ambit are joke for any company you join. By the way I am in business and great fully doing Ambit.
Ambitenergy has nearly 200 closed complaints listed with the Better Business Bureau over the past 3 years. No telling how many are filed but not closed. Over half of those closed were not to the satisfaction of the customer.
Did you also look at how big the company is? did you also look at how many complaints the other energy companies in your area? How about look at the fact that the BBB has them rated at an A. Which the BBB Takes average complaints for that style of company, size of company etc… Also that is also spread over 6 states. Do you know Ambit has over 800,000 customers, so Ambit has 200 complaints all resolved in a manner that the BBB deems is fair to both sides. Hopefully you do understand that means Ambit has a .0025% complaint ratio between customers and complaints. I don’t know about you but I think these odds are pretty good in Ambits favor
Ambit register with Dallas BBB, NY customers can go to http://www.askpsc.com to check over 1000 complaints per month in lats 48 months.
My girlfriend and I just signed up to be customers. Nothing more at this point.
It is Completely a Pyramid with no question.
BUT the energy is cheaper than PP&L guaranteed not by a huge amount but it will save us about 60 a year so far.,
I wanted to answer a so called Businessmans question earlier. Which was along the lines how can it be cheaper to buy from Ambit than from the direct supplier. Well this is easy and is the same way most of your travel websites work.
Ambit buys HUGE Blocks of energy from the Supplier Much larger than general businesses or private people can buy. I’m talking millions of dollars worth of electric Usage. So they get it cheaper for a guaranteed purchase up front and then they sell little blocks at a profit but still cheaper than direct from the supplier.
Ambits marketeing Strategy is by having customers become employees who actually pay to work they make more money.
The company of course makes the lions share but good cosultants will also make money as any pyramid does.
But the question is how many of those 429 consultants will give up after friends and family sign up so the company gets 429 plus new customers buying electric without hiring a huge workforce. It cuts down overhead cost, employees, taxes, and other business expense..
As a business owner I understand this as simple smart marketing.
For example if I hire new employees. They get paid less during training but they are still working for me just at a cheaper rate..
I look at it like this. My knowledge cost me tens of thousands of dollars to learn and Years of time so why should I give all of that time and knowledge I spent to someone for nothing.
No matter how good something looks figure on it being ALOT of work to make anything successful that is worth while.
If after 6 months the person who signed us up can prove they are making money doing it as a consultant I MIGHT consider my girlfriend doing it as a side income but I have to see results in my own electric bill and also income based on fact from the person who got us to sign up before I will endorse anything. Then if we sell ambit I will have six months of electric bills to prove I am providing cheaper electric based on REAL fact.
This is just a real world business aspect and opinion.
Proof is in the paperwork that we will get or we will cancel and go back to PP&L directly.
Brian….Every business is a pyramid..there is always an owner…then he has his management…the there are the distributors and suppliers…I don’t understand what you are so afraid of working in a pyramid…the harder you work the closer to the top you go…Just like a real job working for other Pyramids(Businesses or government)…I have been very successful in the past with MLM…and I see Ambit an awesome, one in a lifetime opportunity…My own business with No inventory, no payroll, no overhead, no risk(unless you think a $400.00 investment is a lot of money, and if you do you have a poverty mindset)…Stop being such pessimist and take a chance and work hard….Unless you enjoy the income you have now…
Alot of ppl dont understand wats going on so it’s a scam.. When at&t was broken those other phone companies were scams too. Idk which companies came out after that but those compaies are still scamming others today n everyday. I dont work for ambit I do sell energy door to door n pl are scared of change n new things. If energy suppliers were scaming ppl all energy agents should be in jail. Alot of the time its the agent who gives us a bad name by slamming or signing up a person with thier permission. W.e the case is dont blame the supplier for your ignorance now if u dont want your own suppier thats your choice but your really missing out on some great offers
Ambit Energy is the Billing Dept. Oncor is the electric. The monopoly on electric is done. At least that is how it is in Texas. When you become a customer the only thing that is different now is you will get a bill that says Ambit Energy on it. As far as being a consultant you have to work it like any busniess. If you think that you will make a million in 5 months that is crazy. I am a teacher/coach and do this on the side. To be successful at this or any business you need to have leadership skills. Alot of the people that aren’t successful at this business is because they don’t know how to be a leader of their team. I have been doing this business since August and have experienced some great things. I am real close to going to the Senior Level, but most importantly I have quite a few in my team that have moved to Regional. I am very honest with people that I am trying to get to become consultants, and explain to them that its not a overnight payoff. BTW- somebody on here said this was a pyramid scheme. That is a total lie. It cant be for one simple reason, Ambit is part of the Better Business Bureau.
Bart-
Actually, ONCOR is the TDSP in Texas, but NOT a monopoly. Ambit provides the electricity, ONCOR delivers it. That’s why ever customer in ONCOR’s territory will see monthly charges from ONCOR on their bill. If ONCOR were a monopoly, then Ambit Energy would not be able to service anyone within their territory.
Good luck on your promotion to SC!
It can’t be a pyramid because ambit is a part of the BBB? You just FAILED your logical fallacy 101 class.
Affirming the consequent (If P, then Q. Q. Therefore P.)
First hand experience. I worked for the biggest media company in the world. Our VP of operations was on the board of directors of the BBB. The company I worked for was being sued and complaints were logged in the BBB. Because the company had a VP on the board of the BBB, the company was able to squash every complaint filed against them without it ever being investigated. Your logic is so screwed I wouldn’t give you the time of day if you were dying of thirst in a desert. You people have to wake up. This is a monetary system, and man dominates land. And every social problem you experience is made from this premise. By the way, the BBB would not investigate the Federal Reserve when I filed a formal complaint against hem for fraud. They simple closed it with a note that it was an illegitimate complaint.
Everyone that’s complaining about Ambit i can go down the line without question and prove that they are under employed, broke, and complains about other business as well as there own business a like. Anyone who is open minded are somewhat successful or on there way to being successful. You pay $429 to join Ambit and you pay $24.99 month for website. Get 15 customers and get free electricity as long as they pay there bills. You can save big money buy getting free energy and make money buy just recruiting other consultants to do the same. Simple business . It’s hard work but it pays off. After a few years you can possibly take the rest of your life off because of residual pay. No I’m not there. But i get free energy, i have customers calling me with friends to sigh up all the time, and i haven’t had one complaint from customers and i have many. Ambit has great leadership and is endorsed by John Maxwell. So Anyone complaining..I call these people Life Loosers..They dont pay their bills on time and expect there life to be grand..It wont work with Ambit or any other Energy company. Pay your bills on time and you’ll notice how Great of a company Ambit is. Ambit totally is a credibale company that has changed the lifes of thousands of people for the good. And will cross one billion dollars this year or next within a six ear period. Pyramid..I dont think so!!!
Check it out. We have 2 different Ambits – 1 Ambit LLC belongs to Jere Tompson another Ambit energy LP belongs to Chris Chambless, Brian Maclure and others. These scam already works in Excel, and Chris Chambless fire consultants and company keep customers. These will be happend again, probably next year if is not soon.
A coworker approached me about how I could save money on my electric bill and even get it for free if I became a consultant. I know someone who switched providers and after a short while, the price went up. What about fees if you switch back to the old company? Also maybe someone could clarify for me — what happens if there is a storm and the power goes out. Which big or little company gets priority? Why should the big established power company give priority to me if I’m not buying power from them? I don’t understand.
Cindy-
Well, who you would call if your power goes out depends on where you live. But, no matter where you live, you’d never call Ambit Energy. You would call the area’s TDSP.
Also, you are allowed to earn “Free Energy” without becoming a consultant. You refer 15 friends/family, and the average of all their bills added together is credited towards your electric bill. My electric bill last month was $7.69!! I was so happy! If it gets any higher than that, my wife is so used to it, she asks me why our bill is so high! LOL!
Good luck to you in which ever path you take!
Regardless of anything, you should never have to pay $429. And why $429 dollars? Where does that money go if supposedly only 2% goes to ambit? Yes you probably can make money eventually but they know the odds are against the MCs when it comes to recruiting. My friend just signed up because his friend was making money. His friends friends were gullable as was mine and fell for it and paid the $429. My friend already missed his “bonuses” and the odds of him getting others to sign are slim. And he’s a great sales man too. All you need is a few good sales men to keep getting others to sign. I know I can sell people. I just wouldn’t want to.
The $429 goes into the compensation plan such as start up Bonuses.
Why should you pay $429? The reason is because you are buying a business, just like any other business, i.e. McDonalds, Amway (another MLM), PaneraBread, etc.
This is not socialism!!!! A business is just not given to you for free. Tyring starting a business from scratch and see what that costs! Buy purchasing a private franchise, it shows the company that you are committed to building a business. To be honest, if you don’t want to build it, great! It will save your sponsor and other leaders a lot of time by not wasting their time trying to help someone who is non-committed and is looking for a handout!
I am a small business owner and when this business was presented to me it blew me away. We make money buy helping people save money. There is no product to sell, no inventory to keep & no collections. Everyone uses Energy, they have to have it, and they cant live without it. I have been an Ambit consultant for 6 days now and have 13 customers and 5 consultants. I have already made back my initial investment and the rest of the year is pure profit. Will everyone have this experience? NO – the ones that are looking for a handout and do not do any work do not get paid! Again, this is not socialism here – pure capitalism.
Nothing changes for the customer at all. Their Distributor still services the lines and sends the bill (that is how it works in PA). The only thing that changes is that they get cheaper energy. If the customer refers 15 customers to me, we take the average supply/transmission charge for the 15 customers and average them. The customer that made these referrals then gets a credit in the amount of the aforementioned average. Smart marketing – incentivize customers to grow your business!!!!
Before energy deregulated energy companies provided three things: Generation, Distribution, and Retail.
Now, since the government ruled this as a monopoly, now they can only do one! Since the companies of the past already have the grids and lines set up, they chose to be the Distributor. Ambit is the Retailer and they get the energy from Shell, the Generator.
Smart people seek the facts from credible sources and check things out for themselves. People on the Internet give opinions all the time but have no material facts to back it up.
So, I trust you are smart! So check it out for yourself at http://www.redpathenergy.com. If you need questions answered call me at 866-275-6890. If it isn’t for you that great! We are not looking for just anybody, we are looking for solid business partners.
I’m sorry to say, but it’s sound like a pyramid, you put $ down and you most work hard to see some money coming in while the one above gets all, if you don’t do the effort to get people to join and bring $ by participating you won’t get a commission, sorry to say it but maybe I’m wrong, but soooooo many scam-not trust at all.
well my whole family works for Ambit except me. My mom has ambit and its still through national grid, Given she only saved $50 last year on her energy bill but that’s still something to be happy about. My cousin works for ambit and has not lost any money nor has she given large amounts to the company to be a representative. Yes there are a lot of people in new york that are trying to get you to use ambit energy ( which is very annoying). However If you simply sign up to change your energy you will not loose any money. I understand people might be indifferent and scared but thats understandable. If you truly want to know what ambit it like instead of talking bad about it because of what some websites say sign up yourself just for the energy. Then and only then do you have any right to say anything bad about a company. To say something like that would be like for me to say that I hate bread because everyone says it tastes bad… Try it yourself
I am an Ambit Energy customer.I signed on with Ambit at a 8.9% rate, which was great. I was unemployed for nine months last year. I fell behind on paying my bill and my electric was cut off. I paid the 90 fee to have my electric turned back on and went about my business. My electric bill for the next 12 months was sky high. I couldn’t figure out why. It doubled and almost tripled some months. I finally moved to a new place because I couldn’t afford to pay a 500 dollar electric bill anymore. Well, my bill was still ridiculously high, so I called to try to find out why. Well, come to find out, back when I had my electricity turned off for non payment, they upped my rate to 18.9%!!!!!! They said that they had sent me a letter saying that it had been raised to the “average rate”. I never got that letter. So, I’ve been paying more than two time more than I thought I was paying!!!!
So, if you’re struggling and poor and if you fall behind on your payment, they punish you by raising your rate. It doesn’t make sense to me AT ALL!!!!!!! I HATE Ambit Energy with a passion. I tell everyone I know not to use them.
I am saddened by the lack of understanding in so many people that have commented here. Many of the comments here are so full of ignorance, yet the people speak as if they have the ‘knowledge’ of the subject.
And I would assume that many others, who haven’t a clue will believe some of the twaddle written here.
Full Disclosure: I am an Ambit Energy consultant who has been building a business for 5 years. I have thousands upon thousands of energy customers in my organization. Yes, I get paid very well. BUT, I worked my rear off to build this business. I am being rewarded for that hard work.
Mike said it right above: “Everyone that’s complaining about Ambit, I can go down the line without question and prove that they are underemployed, broke, and complain about other business too.”
Please, reasonable people who may read this: I suggest to you -> Do not take financial advice from someone who is BROKE! Seek that advice from someone who has been successful. http://ambitenergyopportunity.org I am a firefighter, and have spent my entire career in that service. Ambit Energy is a kind company, always trying to do the right thing.
Be careful of shallow comments on the web. Research for the truth. Ambit Energy operates a legitimate energy service, trying to improve all the time. They are not mistake free, but they try to solve problems and get better as they grow. They operate under strict guidelines and state utility commission rules. They would not be allowed to function if they were violating customer’s rights as a matter of business. There are ‘industry standards’ Ambit Energy follows… and they flex toward the customer on some of those.
For instance: In Texas, all electricity companies send you a ‘Disconnect Notice’ once you are late on paying your bill. Ambit sends the letter a day AFTER you are late, as do ALL other electricity companies. It’s a utility commission rule! Now, Ambit does not ‘charge’ to send that letter. However, there are some companies that charge $20 just to send the customer that notice!
More: In Texas, customers may or may not have to pay a deposit. When a customer does have a deposit, Ambit Energy has some of the lowest deposit requirements of all companies. A lady recently was asked to pay a $400 deposit by another company after she had paid her bill late a couple months in a row. They told her to pay the deposit or get disconnected. She called me, I enrolled her with Ambit and she had NO deposit!
Ambit TRIES to do the customer RIGHT.
Regarding Jamie’s situation: I don’t know that customer, but I know what that customer is referring to… In Texas, it is an industry standard to put a customer on a “standard plan” (higher rate) once they have had their electricity disconnected due to non-payment. It is what most, if not ALL companies do. It costs the company more money to handle customers who always pay late and get disconnected. They recover the cost by charging the customer. It is WRITTEN in the Terms of Service. And, if the truth be known, Ambit Energy will typically allow the customer ONE disconnect before they put them on the higher rate plan. Most companies don’t even do that… (the customer has to contact Ambit to get that courtesy).
Folks, Ambit Energy isn’t out to ‘get anyone.’ All they would like to do is to stay in business, help common people, like me and others, build a reliable income, and offer electricity and natural gas for a little bit less than most of the other companies. That will only work if they get customers who pay their bills every month.
For those of you that are business minded, or would like to begin your journey out of trading your labor for a few dollars, then Ambit Energy just might be for you. Take a look… Become a LEADER of people trying to better themselves! Ambit is a great vehicle for that. I live in NY State and I looked into Ambit Energy a year or so ago, shortly after the county that I live in became open territory for Ambit as a residential supplier. I was turned off by the fact that their residential purchase agreement guaranteed a 1% savings on electricity compared to the INCUMBENT supplier, which is interpreted as the electric utility company. The competing electric suppliers were and still do offer a 30-40% savings as compared to the incumbent supplier. I was planning on building my business more through signing up electric customers for Ambit, rather than expanding my team. I realized that I could not be cost-competitive against other electric suppliers so did not sign up with Ambit. I think Ambit’s pricing strategy is the reason that they have such a low market share in the states where they do business. While I am sure you can build a team and make good money off of the sign-up fees that get paid I don’t think that you can build up a loyal electric customer base.

I am in small business and doing Ambit and I am making good amount with it. I work hard in my small business but, Ambit just word to mouth and I have checks from Ambit. Do it and then say but have passion todo sales and marketing or just write a book on something good do’nt just waste your energy on stuff u do’nt have knowledge. Good luck in whatever u do to help even one person.
Wow a lot of comments about Ambit and deregulation on energy some states. Well to be honest I believe Ambit has a great product and offers great rates for a product 97% of Americans use so why not get involved. The only problem I see with Ambit is that they only offer one product which is electricity. I represent a company that provides electricity in deregulated states and every telecommunication need you can ever ask for. For example if you know someone with a cell phone provider, tv, internet, landline phone and many other products you can earn residual income on all of them. Maybe you have heard of the company 5links and I am a representive in Texas who is very happy to promote it. I get residual income in electricity just like an Ambit rep, but sometimes I run into people that are in contracts with their current providers and cannot switch over at that time so what do you do when that happens? Well as a 5links rep you can earn commission from tv, phone, cell phone, home sercurity and many other telecommunications products. All of these we earn residual income on. If anyone has any questions about diversifying their income through electricity and telecommunications products please email me for more information. God Bless you all!!!
Are we talking about this AWESOME business opportunity for an investment of ONLY $400.00 and $24.95 a month for technical support?….Hello…No inventory, overhead, and NO hassle..and I get paid for talking, saving people money and residual income on a consumable product…STOP thinking like poor people with a poverty mindset…and get out of the chair and make it happen…I’m just coming in and I plan to be successful… I am an experienced and successful MLMer…and Ambit rocks…
There is no doubt that people can make money in sales, and that is what the MLM part of Ambit is. For most people the only way this works for them is they have to believe in whatever it is they’re selling.
What is being sold? Electric supply. How is it priced? Electricity is generally priced as $0.xx per Kwh. Just because everyone uses it doesn’t mean Ambit offers the best deal.
So what would be REALLY useful is if someone had a Kwh rate compare of all the different electric supply companies in a given area, and if Ambit comes out at or near the top then all the better for them.
Yes, I know Ambit has referral incentives, as do some of these other companies. At the end of the day though there are VERY few people that want to be involved in sales. Referring someone isn’t an issue but trying to follow through and make sure they list YOU as the referrer might be. For the vast majority of people it’s going to be the Kwh rate that matters most to them and this is info that should be readily available from whatever company has the best rate in a given area.
